Honda has been developing hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology for many years and plans to launch a new hydrogen vehicle using this technology. In addition to developing its fuel cell technology, since 2013, Honda has been collaborating with General Motors to develop fuel cell systems and hydrogen storage technology.

In February, the two companies had announced a joint development agreement to develop further Phinergy’s aluminum-air primary (non-rechargeable) battery technology ( earlier post ). All three incorporate a fourth-generation, 100 kW LT PEM (Low Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell stack developed in-house by Volkswagen Group Research at the Volkswagen Technology Center for Electric Traction.
