Battery switch is the only option that allows the driver to recharge in less time than it takes to refuel, the means of range extension for today’s gas-powered taxis, according to the company. Better Place will begin its initial network deployment in Canberra, Australia in late 2011 as part of a nationwide infrastructure roll out.

The year of 2011 promises to be one of the most exciting in the history of motoring as electric vehicle services provider Better Place and car manufacturer Renault plan to begin production of tens of thousands of electric vehicles. It is expected however, that as production expands the cost of the battery will decrease.

Driving range will no longer be an obstacle, because customers will be able to plug their cars into charging units in any of the 500,000 charging spots in Israel. Electric vehicles will be available for customers in 2011. Shai Agassi predicts that Israel will have over 100,000 electric vehicles in use by 2010.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Renault unveiled four Lithium-ion battery electric concept vehicles that provide a preview of Renault’s range of production electric vehicles to be released from 2011 on: Twizy ZE Concept (city car); Zoe ZE Concept (compact car); Fluence ZE Concept (5 passenger sedan); and Kangoo ZE Concept (electric van).

The grants will not be available until 2011 and the detail of how they will beallocated and which cars will qualify has still to be worked out. The 2011 start date has been chosen to coincide with theexpected introduction of a wider variety of electric and plug-in hybrid carsin Britain. Car buyers were less enthusiastic.

In addition to a recent electric car deal with NISSAN Motors ( NSANY ), Portland General Electric, the Oregon state governor and GE have also announced a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors ( MMTOF.PK ) to develop and sell the Miev electric car with 85 mile range by 2011. By 2011 look for a larger THINK Ox.
