Other GM initiatives include reducing water use by nearly 35% between 2005 and 2009 at manufacturing facilities worldwide; decreasing fossil fuel at GM plants by using landfill gas, hydro and solar power; recycling 90% of the waste the company generates; and operating 75 landfill-free facilities, more than half of its manufacturing plants globally.

In 2009, POET plants used an average of three gallons of water per gallon of ethanol, which is an 80% decrease from when the company first produced ethanol in 1988. At POET Biorefining - Corning (Iowa) most of the water used for cooling comes from the Corning Waste Water Treatment Plant. is recycled from a nearby quarry.

Diesel Brewing’s process gasifies wood wastes, agricultural residues and manure into a syngas that is cleaned and fed into a catalytic reactor and purification system to generate a suite of alcohols containing butanol, ethanol and methanol. We don’t want to merely make electric power from these waste products.

The anaerobic digester is fed the waste from the distillation process and the wastes from 2,000 dairy cattle and 10,000 beef cattle being raised on the site. Madson identified several ethanol plants that were built in industrial settings that were able to use the waste heat, i.e. from an adjacent refinery, to produce their ethanol.

Not to be outdone, on Tuesday the Norwegian electric car startup, Think, was in Portland being wooed by the state as one of 8 potential places to site their first car manufacturing facility in the United States. One thing is for sure; - electric cars bring down the air pollution, but they sure create another waste pollution problem.
