A Foss Maritime Company’ Green Assist hybrid tug ( earlier post ) has joined the Foss fleet for the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, California. The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has fined two shipping companies for failing to switch from bunker fuel to cleaner, low-sulfur fuel when sailing within 24 miles of the California coast, as required by a state law adopted in 2008. They must also follow all fuel switchover requirements, and maintain accurate records.

This initiative follows a 2008 incentive program that put into service more than 2,200 trucks that currently meet or exceed 2007 US EPA emission standards. Since the launch of the Clean Truck Program on 1 October 2008, pollution at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex has been reduced by more than 23%, according to the Commission.

The OGV Fuel Regulation was adopted by the ARB in 2008 and implementation began on 1 July 2009. It requires OGVs to use less polluting marine distillate fuels instead of heavy fuel oil within a designated area along the California coastline. Click to enlarge.
