AFP Some 21m electric bicycles were sold in China in 2008, according to Frank Jamerson, author of Electric Bikes Worldwide Reports. Recharging a battery can take 5-8 hours, but costs only a few cents a day. Safe places to park and recharge are also needed. The figure has doubled since 2005.

The Karma, a luxury four-passenger sedan, can be recharged by plugging it in; it can then be driven on power from a battery alone for 50 miles. After that, an onboard gasoline generator kicks on to recharge the battery, extending the range by 250 miles between fill-ups. The Karma can be refueled quickly.)

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. This is from "Commercializing Plug-In Hybrids" (pdf), the current CalCars 24-slide presentation about PHEVs available along with other documents at CalCars Downloads. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. Batteries not ready.
