Iron–air batteries, originally proposed in the 1970s, have theoretical energy densities of more than 1,200 Wh/kg; by comparison, present-day lithium-ion batteries come in at about 600 Wh/kg, and even less (350 Wh/kg) if the weight of the cell casing is taken into account. 2017.10.023.

The vehicles run on lithium ion batteries which, using specialist, high-power charging equipment, can be can be fast charged in less than fifteen minutes. Established in 2008, it has already converted eight Lotuses, and is working on five VW Golfs. The longer term plan is to import electric cars.

He was paid about $265,000 in 2008, and he lives in a BYD-owned apartment complex with other engineers. Each of BYDs business units - batteries, mobile-phone components, and autos - was profitable in 2008, albeit on a small scale.

Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not. If these companies are ultimately successful and can convince EV manufacturers to ditch lithuim ion, we could depend on the already robust recycling program.
