North Dakota-based Red Trail Energy (RTE), which since 2007 has operated an ethanol production facility with annual production of about 60 million gallons per year, is proposing sequestration of CO 2 produced from starch fermentation to lower the overall carbon intensity of the fuel for the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).

The California LCFS regulation, which went in to effect on 15 April 2010, targets a reduction of the carbon intensity (CI), on a full-fuel lifecycle basis, of transportation fuels (measured in gCO 2 e/MJ) used in California by an average of 10% by the year 2020.

The GridWise smart-grid trial in the Seattle area in 2007 found that consumers lowered their energy use by 10 percent and utilities were able to shave their peak demand by 15 percent.
