The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid. Drivers of converted cars have received high levels of cooperation from dealer service departments so far. We believe both NiMH and Li-Ion are ready. Conversions are limited to certain vehicle types.

The biggest obstacle for those who would prefer an alternative has been lack of purchasable plug-in electric vehicles since 2003 when auto manufacturers ceased production of plug-in EVs like the GM EV1, Honda EV Plus, and Toyota RAV4-EV. The battery pack is comprised of 5,088 lithium-ion cells for a cummulative 35kWhrs of energy storage.

Despite this, a 2003 EPRI study , assuming only $2/gallon gas , zero buying incentives, and a PHEV premium of $3-$5,000 more than standard hybrids, shows that the total lifetime cost of ownership for a PHEV will be lower than that of any other vehicle type -- so the payback will be there. The EPRI says lithium-ion batteries are ready now.

MidAmericans David Sokol, BYDs Wang, and company advisor Li Lu flew with Sokol from Detroit to Omaha so that Wang could meet Buffett in person. Wang entered the automobile business in 2003 by buying a Chinese state-owned car company that was all but defunct. The E6 will hit the Chinese market later this year.
