Consumption of lithium in rechargeable batteries by end use, 2012-2017, kt LCE. Batteries accounted for 27% of global lithium consumption in 2012, up from 15% in 2007 and 8% in 2002. The lithium industry is therefore becoming more reliant on rechargeable batteries to sustain high rates of future demand growth, Roskill concludes.

Why hes banking on an obscure Chinese electric car company and a CEO who - no joke - drinks his own battery fluid. The E6 will hit the Chinese market later this year. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. I had surmised this in my 2002 car design thesis [link] even before anyone was talking about plug in series hybrids.
