All electrified types contributed to growth as hybrids (HEV) increased their volume by 36%, pure electric (BEV) by 91% and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) by 173%. By brand, these cars represented an important part of the volume registered by Smart (96%), Lexus and Toyota (95% and 66% respectively), DS (42%), Suzuki (41%) and Land Rover (37%).

In India, around 23 hybrid cars are available, ranging from the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga to the Lamborghini Revuelto. Maruti Suzuki introduced mild hybrids in India in 2015 with the launch of the Ciaz diesel with SHVS. PHEVs can run as electric vehicles in cities, significantly reducing tailpipe pollution.

Registrations of BEV, PHEV, HEV and other electric vehicles totalled 96,600 units in July—as demand increased by 29% from July 2018. Consumers bought 505,900 SUVs in July, as demand increased by 8.7%. Volkswagen Group led the SUV segment, as the German maker recorded 25.7% drop on the same period last year.

Registrations of SUVs fell by 48% to 338,300 units while increasing their market share to almost 40%. For example, volume only fell by 5% for the Volvo XC40, which became the top-selling premium SUV in March, and the Range Rover Evoque registered 5,700 units, down by 3%. Some models performed better than others.

Geo renamed the Nova as the Geo Prizm and added other models jointly produced with Isuzu and Suzuki in North America and Japan, but separated them from its “American” cars. Rivian will be delivering all-electric pickups and SUVs very soon. The brand lasted eight years, but never really established itself in the market. .
