On paper, the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Ultimate seems like a fine compact EV. Quirky” is an adjective that’s been applied to Volvos in the past, in ways both good and bad, and it certainly applies here, though the quirks are more confounding than fun. Props to Volvo for that. But the price tag is a bit off-putting.

The secret is that Polestar is an electric performance brand from Volvo and its Chinese owner, Geely Holding. It was established in 2017 and is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, where Volvo has been for a long time (although the Polestar 2 is built in China). Inside, the 2021 Polestar 2 shows its Volvo origins.

Q: Currently only London can claim to have, in anyway, a widespread distribution of recharging points for electric vehicles – how do you envisage this problem to be solved? Do you agree with Volvo that Boris Johnson should look to peg congestion charging with vehicle CO2 emissions, in much the same way as Vehicle Excise Duty?
