The EV battery charges when the renewable energy mix on the grid is highest and the battery discharges throughout the day to support the household load.

Light-Duty Demand for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure , the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) estimates that the USA will require 28 million charging ports to accommodate a “mid-adoption scenario” of 33 million EVs on the road by 2030. And this is where truck stops and roadside convenience stores come into play.

While I was aware of this trend — I see it loud and clear in my own neighborhood — I hadn’t realized how wide-spread this trend actually was in the US. Also, besides giving you the ability to charge at night when most utility rates are lower, future vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology may allow you to sell some of your stored energy back to the utilities. Currently, there are some industrial facilities that use battery swapping to replenish the energy stores of electric forklifts.
