The University of California, Davis and the BMW Group released the largest publicly available study of electric-car users yet conducted, including more than 120 families who drove the fully electric MINIE automobile more than 1 million miles in California, New York and New Jersey from June 2009 to June 2010.

If the BMW i3 is run on electricity from renewable sources, the figures improve by well over 50%. The space requirements of the electric motor used in the BMW i3 Concept have been reduced by 40% compared with the motor used in the MINIE. The battery can be fully recharged in six hours at a standard power socket.

Both ministers drove a MINIE electric car at the event as they announced plans to support motorists by providing help worth £2000-£5000 towards buying their first electric or plug-in hybrid car when they hit the showrooms.
