In order to support the transition from the gas tax to a mileage-based charge, the Financing Commission recommends a ten cent per gallon increase in the federal gas tax (15 cents for diesel) and indexing the tax to inflation going forward.

As sales of electric vehicles begin to reach significant numbers across the US, states are exploring approaches to replace lost tax revenue since EV drivers don’t pay fuel taxes as drivers of gas-powered cars do at gas stations. Unfortunately there is currently no simple and agreed upon best replacement for the fuel tax.

Another expectation is that homeowners and businesses will become “ fully electrified ” by replacing oil, propane and gas furnaces with heat pumps along with gas fired stoves as well as installing solar power and battery systems. The San Diego backlash over a mileage tax may be just the beginning.

that car was missing precisely what the Volt (and any other would-be electric car under consideration today) is missing -- an appropriate battery technology that provides decent power within a decent weight and space constraint at anything approaching a decent price. We are addicted to the gasoline tax both at the State and Federal level.
