It shares an all-new platform with the purely petrol Outlander version. litre combustion petrol engine allied with twin electric motors, a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack and all-wheel-drive. For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions. Is it good value?

Its natural EV rivals are the GWM Ora and MG4 , but the Dolphin also competes with many petrol-powered hatchbacks. That’s important because it makes it a viable well-specified alternative to petrol-powered hatchbacks such as the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Kia Cerato and Hyundai i30. That’s the car we’ve tested here.

Unlike the recently launched Genesis GV60 – which is built on a bespoke EV architecture – the GV70 Electrified takes the familiar underpinnings of a GV70 running on petrol or diesel and adapts them to EV life. It comes with a safety triangle, a first aid kit, eight airbags and active bonnet to prevent injuries to pedestrians.

The Peugeot’s one is an extra $1325, then they ask another $79 for the flimsy bag to store it in. As this e-2008 is an EV adapted to the platform of an ICE vehicle (the petrol 2008 SUV), packaging isn’t as smart as a dedicated EV platform’s. This is a shame, as storing charge cables under here would be ideal.

The revised front end now features Polestar’s ‘SmartZone’ – including a front-facing camera and radar to bring improved standard safety kit. It runs Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto (both wired), while access to the Google Play Store brings plenty of fun. Nor is there much to differentiate between grades.

With two Electric cars, at the time a Nissan Lean and Mitsubishi Outlander, we use a considerable amount of electricity but not much petrol, so already we were a reasonable way down the less CO2 road. Our system was configured with two battery units each with 2.4kWh storage giving 4.8KWh of maximum stored capacity.
