The standardized 20 MW alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) modules—now called by the product name “scalum”—will enable an installed capacity of more than 700 MW. This will also create one of the largest water electrolysis plants in Europe. We’re starting with steel in Boden, Sweden, but that’s just the beginning.

thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers recently signed a supply contract with Shell for the large-scale project Hydrogen Holland I in the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Shell’s final investment decision to build the Holland Hydrogen I is expected in 2022, after which the intended start of production will be in 2024.

Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia have developed a continuous electrically-driven membrane process which successfully enriches lithium from seawater samples of the Red Sea by 43,000 times (i.e., to 9013.43 ppm) with a nominal Li/Mg selectivity >45 million. —Li et al.
