And I’m one those million since they’re counting plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as well as full battery electrics. 379,125 plug-in hybrids (26%). Toyota Prius Prime PHEV – 14,275. Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV – 7,988. Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV – 4,427. The number of EVs in my neighborhood seems to be growing weekly.

I was at the end of a 3-year lease and a 6-month extension on my 2018 Chevrolet Volt Plug-in Hybrid. The Tesla adapter is a must in my neighborhood. The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

Darbee noted that although California has about 12% of the population, it has about 25% of the demand for plug-in hybrids. Berkeley will have a higher percentage than Fresno—it will not be unlikely for 3-5 PEVs to show up on one neighborhood circuit in Berkeley, overwhelming the local circuit, and leading to blackouts, he said.
