CALSTART’s Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) Small Hybrid Bus Working Group members have selected the supplier team of StarTrans-Azure Dynamics for a 16-plus vehicle national hybrid-electric bus procurement. StarTrans also manufactures buses on their newest platform, the Balance Hybrid Drive, which utilizes the Ford E450 chassis.

All-New, All Hybrid. Toyota has added another model to its ever increasing stable of electrified vehicles with the all-new 2023 Sequoia now exclusively hybrid powered. Fuel economy numbers have not been announced, but the same gasoline-hybrid power plant in the Toyota Tundra pickup gets 20 mpg city/24 highway/22 combined.

You could argue a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) does that, but that’s not really true. liter gas engine (28 mpg highway) for a run in the snow up to Lake Tahoe. I followed that with a week in an Audi Q4 E-tron EV driving several hundred miles around town. The Q5 55 is a plug-in hybrid that packs more horsepower—362 total hp and 369 ft-.lb.

This 160-mile drive spotlighted the handling, driving characteristics and performance. In our mixed driving, which had significant motor regeneration due to mountain elevation and tight curves, we averaged 4 miles per kilowatt-hour (kWh). In 297 miles of mostly freeway driving through Southern California we averaged 22.1 mpg, but did a bit better on a 207-mile freeway run with the smart cruise control set at 65 mph, achieving 25.1 Powertrain – 10 years/100,000 miles.
