Tesla’s rival BYD is considering Mexico for its new electric vehicle (EV) plant. The Chinese automaker aims to expand its global presence and sees Mexico as an excellent place to reach its goals. BYD Mexico’s country manager, Zhou Zhou, told Nikkei Asia that Mexico is a key market with potential.

BBA currently produces seven model ranges, with fully-electric, plug-in hybrid and internal combustion engines. In addition to Shenyang, new assembly sites for sixth-generation high-voltage batteries will be added in Debrecen (Hungary), San Luis Potosí (Mexico) and Woodruff near Spartanburg (USA) in the next few years.

BMW still aims for about 50% global EV sales by the end of the decade, in line with a plan the automaker rolled out in 2021 , but still isn’t ready to declare an end date for internal combustion. Production will then be added in Germany, and finally in Mexico in 2027. “We will stay flexible—even well into the 2030s.”
