Berkeley Lab/U. Hawaii team provides direct experimental evidence for mechanism for PAH formation in combustion; cleaner fuels could result

Green Car Congress

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (Berkeley Lab) and the University of Hawaii have provided direct experimental evidence for the validity of a proposed mechanism for the first step in the process that transforms gas-phase molecules into solid particles such as soot and other carbon-based compounds.

Sandia Labs and HHC partner to design metal hydride hydrogen storage system for forklifts

Green Car Congress

Adrian Narvaez of Hawaii Hydrogen Carriers (HHC) observes a metal hydride storage tank, part of a project led by Sandia National Laboratories. Current hydrogen storage units require high pressure (5,000 pounds per square inch, or psi) to achieve a short refueling time, and high pressure refueling requires an on-site compression system.

Insight into benzene formation could help development of cleaner combustion engines

Green Car Congress

For nearly half a century, astrophysicists and organic chemists have been on the hunt for the origins of C 6 H 6 , the benzene ring—an elegant, hexagonal molecule comprising 6 carbon and 6 hydrogen atoms. They believe that the finding could one day lead to cleaner combustion engines. This work was supported by the DOE Office of Science.

Project shows maritime fuel cell generator can increase energy efficiency by up to 30% at part load; reliability and cost issues

Green Car Congress

A recent project demonstrated a 100 kW fuel cell generator with 72 kg of hydrogen storage for marine applications. The generator was designed and built by Hydrogenics with safety and regulatory reviews by the Hydrogen Safety Panel, US Coast Guard, and the American Bureau of Shipping.

Sandia Labs project team building fuel cell cold ironing system for deployment at Port of Honolulu in 2015

Green Car Congress

The work comes on the heels of last year’s study and analysis that confirmed the viability of hydrogen fuel cells to provide auxiliary power to docked or anchored ships. The unit will fit inside a 20-foot shipping container and will consist of four 30-kilowatt fuel cells, a hydrogen storage system and power conversion equipment.

Amyris processes Ceres sweet sorghum into renewable diesel using soluble and cellulosic sugars

Green Car Congress

The pilot-scale project use both free (soluble) sugars and biomass (cellulosic) sugars from Ceres’ sweet sorghum hybrids grown in Alabama, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana and Tennessee. When used as a fuel precursor, farnesene can be hydrogenated to farnesane, which has a high cetane number (58).
