Low-lying and other vulnerable countries calling for fast action on non-CO2 global warming pollutants

Green Car Congress

Led by the tiny Pacific island of the Federated States of Micronesia, a growing group of low-lying islands and other vulnerable countries are calling for fast action on the approximately 50% of global warming that is caused by pollutants other than carbon dioxide (CO 2 ).

Indo-US task force to study HFC phase-down

Green Car Congress

The global warming potentials (GWP) of HFCs range from 140 (HFC-152a) to 11,700 (HFC-23), according to the US EPA. The task force will include industry representatives, scientists, and government officials from India and the US to evaluate a phase-down of the production and use of HFCs under the Montreal Protocol.

Global ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) and HFC emissions (A), global CO 2 and HFC emissions (B), and ODS, HFC, and CO 2 global RF (C) for the period 2000–2050. Their contribution to global warming is currently small, but can increase to the equivalent of 9-19% (CO 2 -eq. Velders et al. 2009) Click to enlarge.

New international Climate and Clean Air Coalition to focus on reduction of short-lived climate pollutants

Green Car Congress

Global benefits from full implementation of measures for reduction of short-lived climate pollutants in 2030 compared to the reference scenario. Such pollutants together account for approximately one-third of current global warming, have significant impacts on public health, the environment, and world food productivity.

Cutting Non-CO2 Pollutants Can Delay Abrupt Climate Change; The Fast Action Climate Agenda

Green Car Congress

By 2050, HFC emissions could equal up to 19% of global CO 2 emissions under business-as-usual scenarios. The small island nations of Micronesia and Mauritius submitted a joint proposal in April to phase down production and consumption of HFCs under the Montreal Protocol. North American Countries Target “Super” Greenhouse Gases Through Strengthened Ozone Treaty

Green Car Congress

The US, Canada, and Mexico have submitted a proposal to strengthen climate protection under the Montreal Protocol— the international treaty that phases out the production of a number of substances responsible for ozone depletion. The proposal targets the production and use of HFCs, a group of “super” greenhouse gases. Source: IGSD.
