It appears that South Korean automaker Kia is taking some steps to ensure that its EV9 all-electric SUV will qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit in the United States next year. Currently, production of the EV9 is in South Korea, but Kia is looking to start manufacturing the all-electric SUV at its West Point, Georgia plant.

Kia expects the EV9 will qualify for the full $7,500 EV tax credit by early next year. Kia America’s head of corporate communications, James Bell, told Nikkei that moving EV9 production to its West Point, GA plant will enable it to qualify for a part of the EV tax credit. Kia’s first three-row electric SUV is off to a good start.

The new model will join several hybrids also in development, along with at least on South Korea-only model expected to debut at the same time as the EV3. It will build the EV9 in Georgia, making it at least partially eligible for the credits, but there’s no word on when or if the EV6 will make the leap to domestic production.

Hyundai was recently spotted testing a Lucid Air electric sedan in South Korea, suggesting a high-end Hyundai EV could be in the works. After being rewarded for its contributions to the state of Georgia with its own “Hyundai Day,” the company said it expects to begin production in Q4 , ahead of its initial early 2025 timeline.
