The Saturn version of the two-mode plug-in hybrid at the Milford Proving Grounds. GM is producing 2 vehicles a day with the goal of having a total of 76 vehicles available by the end of the summer; these vehicles will be used for validation testing ranging from fit and finish reviews, to durability testing to eventual crash testing.

There is more to Dan Neil's recent LA Times column than a favorable review of yet another gasoline-only hybrid. As underscored last month when GM announced it would build a plug-in hybrid version of its Saturn Vue, the logic of electric propulsion is compelling. He likes the Nissan Altima Hybrid well enough.

The electric sofas and scooters were so much cooler - and quieter - than the gasoline powered stinkers that predominate. The plug-in Priuses are almost doubling the fuel efficiency of Google standard Prius fleet, getting 74 MPG rather than 41 MPG. GM has been getting a lot of attention with its plug-in intentions.

How does this sound: 100+ MPG in a regular vehicle? Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner. A PHEV with only a 20-mile all-electric range is 62% lower (see printed page 95 in the 2004 study ). What Are Plug-In Hybrids?

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles.
