The Nikkei reports that Toyota Motor Corp. will introduce a new Prius minivan equipped with Li-ion batteries early next year—the first of a coming rollout of hybrids equipped with Li-ion packs. A hybrid vehicle that Toyota plans to introduce around 2015 will also offer a choice between the two batteries.

Toyota has provided more detail on the new Auris HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) concept, to be unveiled next week at the Frankfurt motor show. The concept, which previews the production model of the hybrid to be built in the UK beginning in the second half of 2010, uses the same powertrain applied in the current-generation Prius.

The RAV4 Hybrid boasts several advantages over the standard RAV4, including a smoother powertrain and better fuel economy.

Overall, light duty vehicle sales rose 15.1% Toyota reported December sales of sales of 17,964 hybrid vehicles, up 47.2% December sales of all light-duty vehicles reached 187,860 units, an increase of 32.3% The Prius posted 11,775 units, up 49.8%. Reported hybrid sales as a percentage of OEM light vehicle sales.

At the recent SAE 2009 World Congress in Detroit, General Motors engineers presented the first front-wheel-drive (FWD) iteration of their two-mode hybrid transaxle, termed the 2MT70 ( earlier post ), scheduled for its first application in the Saturn 2009 VUE 2-Mode Hybrid light sport-utility vehicle later this year ( earlier post ).

Passenger cars will need to reach 39mpg while light trucks must hit 30mpg. Toyota has responded by vowing to continue to develop more green technology. Nissan has also outlined its support for Obama and stressed its record in supporting proposals for lower emissions and fuel economy.
