Capstone Turbine Corporation successfully completed track testing of a Kenworth Class 7 hybrid electric work truck using its 65kW microturbine as an on-board range extender. The latest Kenworth T680 Advantage—Kenworth’s fuel-efficiency leader—has gained up to 10% in fuel efficiency compared to a standard Kenworth T680 built in 2013. The 10% gain for the heavy-duty truck equates to a yearly savings of more than $4,600 in fuel per truck for the average long-haul operation.

The Refuse Retrofit Program will be offered through select qualified partners and installers. This process results in increased fuel economy. While fuel economy improvements are seen in Performance Mode, the greatest benefit is increased productivity. Eaton is currently seeking partners for the program.

The Odyne plug-in hybrid drive system reduces fleet operating and maintenance costs, and depending on duty cycle, enables large trucks to obtain significant fuel economy improvements compared to traditional diesel engines. Although the county automotive fleet includes hybrids, these are the first hybrid trucks they are putting to work.
