The Prius posted 18,886 units, up 40.3% Mercury Mariner sales were 3,921 (also a record for August), up 50%. Mercury Milan sales were 3,844, up 112%. The Prius posted 11,775 units, up 49.8%. Hybrid gains were largely due to an increase in Prius sales (up 29.7% Retail sales were down 9% while fleet sales declined 47%. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury retail sales increased 9% versus a year ago. Ford Escape sales totaled 20,241, a July record and up 94% versus a year ago, and Mercury Mariner sales were up 71%.

Comparing GM’s April sales with March, total volume was up 11%, or about 16,600 cars, crossovers and trucks, largely driven by a return to more normal volumes of fleet sales compared with a very weak first quarter. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 129,898, down 31% compared with April 2008. Sales of cars were down 28.8%
