In the latest monthly report on its autonomous driving project, Google engineers outlined some of the steps they are taking to teach their self-driving cars to share the road safely with cyclists. Waymo, the self-driving unit from Google parent company Alphabet, is set to expand its autonomous vehicle testing to include select freeways in Arizona. Waymo says that it also has years of testing experience with rider-only vehicle fleets, set to help inform its safety approach to the expansion.

The company already has a large fleet of robotaxis in San Francisco, which can be ordered and paid for via its app, and hopes to procure a license in Los Angeles to operate and expand its service. California, too, has made a prime location for the human-less fleet in that robotaxis are immune from receiving moving violations.
