The vehicle, based upon a Chevy Silverado 3500 Class 3 commercial fleet truck, is the only Class 3 commercial work truck that has 30-40 miles (48-64 km) of all-electric range, EDI says.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

GM calls the Volt an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV. It is powered by a battery pack that when fully charged has a range of up to 40 miles; it also has a small gas engine that turns a generator that charges the battery once it is depleted. Which one applies to the Chevy Volt, to be introduced later this year by GM?

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse.
