Study finds engines emit exhaust nanoparticles even when not fueled during engine braking

Green Car Congress

Exhaust particle size distributions measured by ELPI (color map) and particle concentration measured by CPC (white line) during individual engine braking conditions (speed change from 32 km/h to 0 km/h). The exhaust sample was taken from the exhaust manifold. The exhaust sample was taken from the exhaust manifold.

Study shows renewable diesel from crude tall oil is a high quality drop-in fuel for off-road engines

Green Car Congress

A team from the University of Vaasa (Finland) and UPM-Kymmene Corporation has examined how the blends of fossil and renewable diesel produced from crude tall oil (CTO) affect the performance and exhaust emissions of the modern common-rail off-road diesel engine. Neat HB was also studied. —Niemi et al. independent of fuel.

Ricardo investigating potential for its split-cycle engine in large engine market

Green Car Congress

In a poster-session paper presented at CIMAC Congress 2016 in Finland, Ricardo described the use of this split-cycle concept in high- and medium-speed engines for power generation to achieve efficiencies of 60% from units of 1–30 MW mechanical output. CCGT units of > 250 MW are achieving 55-60% brake thermal efficiency (BTE) at full load.

Study finds that optimizing engine parameters for renewable diesel can reduce PM and NOx both by more than 25%

Green Car Congress

A team of researchers in Finland reports that by adjusting engine parameters for the use of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) renewable diesel fuel across a range of loads (50%, 75%, and 100%), particulate matter and NO x emissions can both be reduced by more than 25% relative to the values from using HVO with standard engine conditions.
