The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has published new data demonstrating the correlation between the market uptake of electrically-chargeable vehicles (ECVs) and both GDP and customer incentives. The market share of diesel vehicles fell to 39.5% compared to the same month last year, meaning SUVs accounted for 33% of the total market in February. However, the performances of these markets offset volume declines in 13 other European markets. MPVs saw market share decline by 2.1 percentage points in February.

Registrations of new cars fell furthest in 2012 in Greece (-41%), Portugal (-38%) and Cyprus (-25%), while at the other end of the scale new cars increased by more than 12% in in Estonia and Hungary. Diesel cars have traditionally had lower CO 2 emissions than their petrol counterparts although this gap has narrowed in recent years.
