This has resulted in higher catalyst loading per volume of substrate and led to downsizing of systems from those available in 2010. New substrates are designed with thinner walls or higher porosity, which allows the coating of better catalysts without sacrificing durability.

A recent white paper by Leslie Bromberg of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and Wai K. Methanol first surfaced as a potentially interesting transportation fuel in the wake of the oil crisis in 1973. The early interest resulted in several programs, mainly based in California, for its use.
