The positive results from this test indicate that we can downsize our battery pack, reducing cost and weight of the vehicle, and still achieve the 40 mile all-electric range needed for optimized typical driving. It’s important to note that Raser’s electric Hummer H3E can achieve similar results to the Chevy Volt.

GM’s electrified vehicles today include the extended-range electric Chevrolet Volt, Spark EV and Buick LaCrosse, Regal, Chevrolet Malibu and Impala with eAssist. On the 40 mpg+ highway side, in addition to the Volt and Spark EV (with the Cadillac ELR coming), GM also currently has the Sonic and the Cruze Eco and Cruze Diesel.

According to Brooks, among the technologies GM is looking to in the gasoline engine area are: Continued aggressive downsizing. The 2017 Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle has a US average GHG intensity of 200 g/mile; the new 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid (not plug-in) has a GHG CI of 184 g/mile.

General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform. See Chevy Volt for latest. Now Lutz envisions selling hundreds of thousands of Volts a year, probably priced below $30,000. I want to stick around to see the Volt come to market.

All of this means a PHEV uses much less liquid fuel (as little as 10% of a conventional vehicle’s averaged annual fuel consumption), saving money and extending the miles per gallon of gasoline or alternative liquid fuel. In fact, the optimized PHEV is much more efficient as a long range liquid fuel vehicle, because the engine is downsized.
