Now at the Frankfurt Motor Show Ford has announced a new family of petrol engines offering the opportunity to down size engine capacity without suffering a reduction in performance. In fact, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 20 per cent compared to a conventional petrol engine.

China’s fourth largest car manufacturer Chongqing Changan Automobile Co and Orbital Corporation Limited have formed a joint development to work on a concept engine. It is hoped that with fuel economy improvements, the Euro IV emission levels will be achieved.

At the SAE 2009 World Congress last week, engineers from Honda R&D Co described the development of a variable compression ratio (VCR) engine that is enabled by a dual piston mechanism. The engine has been tested in an otherwise conventional production 2.0 per cent improvement in fuel economy in operation.
