Building materials retailer Grange Builders Providers, of Baldoyle, Dublin, has purchased a Smith Newton truck for deliveries of building and DIY products. Designed for city and town center use, the Smith Newton is powered by an 80 kWh Li-ion battery pack and a 120 kW electric motor.

Because of Hondas different architecture (the engine runs whenever the motor runs), aftermarket conversion of Hondas are unlikely. Pricing from $8-15,000 for installed low-speed EV range of 8-24 miles. The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid.

Our friend Doug, of Tesla Motors Club fame, was at the event and went for a ride in the diminutive one, armed with a video camera to record the ride, the results of which we are happy to share with you after the break. We always seem to hear that one coming from a mile away. When a car is operating on the electric motor only, throttle and speed dependent synthesised sound projects an engine sound in front of the vehicle. Still, the instant torque of the electric motor is a rush you get to experience all the time in city driving; each time you pull away from a red light and stop sign youre wondering why gasoline engines ever became popular. The car is noisy, with the hum of the electric motor omnipresent when youre not at a standstill.

However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service, which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route, these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept. My local post office is about 5 miles from my house, so could possible fit the range requirements.

BYD , for examples, says their 60 mile range-extended vehicle can add 30 miles of range in ten minutes. I dont like the idea of leasing a battery pack, or project Better Places pay for however-so-many miles on a plan and whatnot. Install 3 miles of charging lane with about the same frequency as Rest Stops. not an issue.
