PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America division will purchase 100 Newton Series 2000 all-electric commercial vehicles in 2012 from Smith Electric Vehicles, bringing the total number of its electric fleet to more than 280. The all-electric trucks are delivery trucks used on urban routes with fewer daily miles.

Designed to run on waste heat from the exhaust of small industrial furnaces, diesel engines and gas turbines, Cyclone’s WHE has also been adapted for other recovered energy applications. One such extended use is the Phoenix 10, an electric power generator that runs on used motor oil.

UPS plans to purchase approximately 700 liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks and to build four refueling stations by the end of 2014. An initial investment of more than $18 million to build fueling stations will be supported by the purchase of the 700 LNG tractors and continued expansion of the natural gas fleet in the US.

UPS plans to invest approximately $50 million to build an additional nine liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling stations, bringing the total number of stations to 13. The enhanced LNG fueling infrastructure will support the operation of approximately 1,000 UPS LNG tractors that will displace more than 24 million gallons of diesel fuel annually.

UPS’ first-generation diesel hybrid delivery vans improved the on-road fuel economy by 28.9% Both the Freightliner hybrid model and the conventional model use a Mercedes-Benz MBE 904 four-cylinder diesel engine. Electrification of medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) vehicles is an important component of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigating climate change. As of December 2022, more than 5,600 electric school buses are in operation, on order or funded. they created about 28% of the automotive sector’s GHG emissions in 2020.
