Flash Drive: 2023 Toyota Prius Prime PHEV Plug-in Hybrid Technology in an All-New Package Toyota is taking the lead suggesting how you should drive a plug-in hybrid. The all-new 2023 Prius Prime gets two less miles per gallon in hybrid mode than the 2022 model, but the all-electric driving range has increased substantially.

Only available in the US beginning in March of 2021, the hot-selling Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) was apparently the top-selling PHEV in the US last year. From where I sit, a new PHEV from Jeep outselling the Toyota RAV4 Prime is actually pretty impressive. Flip a coin.

Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Another top-selling EV beyond Tesla models that is not included is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV, which likely saw 2021 sales of between 20,000-25,000.

Per the IRS: Beginning January 1, 2023, if you buy a qualified previously owned electric vehicle (EV) or fuel cell vehicle (FCV) from a licensed dealer for $25,000 or less, you may be eligible for a previously owned clean vehicle tax credit under Internal Revenue Code Section 25E. As long as they fit certain criteria.

Probably the most needed and least controversial proposed change is the elimination of the phaseout of the tax cap that begins in the quarter after a manufacturer sells 200,000 BEVs or PHEVs in the US.
