For years now, inventors and sellers of electric car conversion kits have been blasting traditional automakers for not providing the 100 m.p.g. Three years ago, the magazine Popular Mechanics even wrote an article prodding the auto industry for not building the 100 m.p.g. Waters, it turns out, learned a lot during his days in Detroit.

And, if you consider lifetime costs of owning an EV versus owning a traditional internal combustion car, even if the initial purchase price of the EV is much more than your combustion car and you have to replace a battery for $4,000 after 7-10 years, the EV still costs less to operate. It is simply the cost of doing business. "On some products, the costs, particularly in advanced technologies, are high," he said in a lengthy interview with Automotive News (free subscription required).
