Motor was lost long ago. I am leaning towards a golf cart or forklift motor. All the Golf cart motors I have been finding on the net are either 10 or 19 spline. I have the resources to create an adapter to convert the 13 spine either up or down to match a golf cart motor.

So how can these motorcycle-sized electric vehicles be priced at less than half the cost of even the cheapest electric cars available in the US? As LSVs, these are classified as motor vehicles, but not in the same way as passenger cars. Because they’re not really cars, essentially. And lastly, let’s talk convenience.

The NYPD already uses electric scooters and electric powered golf carts on boardwalks, in parks and some transit hubs. The FDNY and NYPD initially will use the vehicles for non-emergency duties, including use by NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents. The Chevrolet Volt is the first electric car being used by the NYPD.

I went back to Parkrose hardware today to pick up stainless steel bolts to attach the motor cables to the controller. This switch prevents the motor controller from engaging when the accelerator pedal is pressed. On a more dangerous note, I ordered my 18 USBatt 8-v golf-cart batteries from American Battery company in California.

In addition to a recent electric car deal with NISSAN Motors ( NSANY ), Portland General Electric, the Oregon state governor and GE have also announced a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors ( MMTOF.PK ) to develop and sell the Miev electric car with 85 mile range by 2011. Considering the cost of batteries, these are disposable cars.

And, if you consider lifetime costs of owning an EV versus owning a traditional internal combustion car, even if the initial purchase price of the EV is much more than your combustion car and you have to replace a battery for $4,000 after 7-10 years, the EV still costs less to operate.
