Supported by a $3-million California Energy Commission grant, the companies are working to convert a fleet of six, Class-6 International armored trucks into “Zero Emission with Range Extension” vehicles—PHEV trucks that operate with electricity and renewable natural gas (RNG). The CNG storage tanks are roof-mounted.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

The power electronics module in the engine compartment converts the battery’s direct current (DC) to alternating current; a DC converter couples the 12-volt electrical system with the high-voltage system. At low temperatures, the system is aided by an electric PTC heating element; an air conditioner is activated in hot weather.

Competition is going to force them to produce a comfortable, usable, extended range EV for that price, and I will just have to wait. o well I guess they think all yanks hate diesels. hopefully diesel prices will dip below regular since they finished all of the low sulfur diesel producing plants. and 49 mpg.
