The County of Alameda recently entered into a partnership with ElectraDrive for a pilot conversion of one of its fleet Dodge Dakotas to extended-range electric drive. Products are targeted at pickups, vans, SUVs and large sedans. The vehicle is expected to enter road-testing around the middle of 2010.

Australian manufacturer Roev plans to do just that from 2023 by converting Toyota Hiluxes and Ford Rangers to electric, with conversions priced from $47,990. Something we heard from a lot of fleets is the desire to convert slightly older vehicles to extend the life of their existing assets. 2023 Roev electric Toyota HiLux.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At these prices, people are buying the "environmental feature" -- they want to be among the first owners of the worlds cleanest extended-range vehicles. Conversions are limited to certain vehicle types.

Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform.

Third, I dont understand why people feel it available in message chatting to speak in a manner they would doubtless not use in personal conversation. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. Must you say "incredibly idiotic" and "mind numbingly dumb"?
