The ongoing tensions between Italy and Alfa Romeo’s parent company Stellantis reached a head last week when the Italian government told the automaker that naming its upcoming Alfa Romeo EV the Milano was against the law because the car will be built in Poland. but this issue is more about Italy vs. Stellantis than anything else.

Fiat’s new 500e (Source: Stellantis) Stellantis has decided to temporarily lay off some 2,250 workers at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy. Of course, its home turf of Italy has some of the lowest EV adoption rates in Europe, at just 4% of the market. But the Italian government is working to change that.

The Alfa Romeo is being built in the same factory in the south of Italy that turns out the Jeeps. There’s no mechanical connection between the front and rear axles. To give the Tonale handling some Alfa Romeo flavor, the main change the company’s engineers made was to install quicker steering with fewer turns lock-to-lock.
