The Energy Department selected three offshore wind demonstrations to receive up to $47 million each over the next four years to deploy innovative, grid-connected systems in federal and state waters by 2017. The projects are located off the coasts of New Jersey, Oregon, and Virginia.

Debates over the feasibility and value of such vehicle-to-grid technology go back decades. This is good for the grid.

OnStar and Google are working together to demonstrate a new OnStar service for managing the charging of Chevrolet Volts with renewable energy, using the 17 Chevrolet Volts in Google’s “Gfleet” based at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. Renewables in the US grid. Wind accounted for 2.3%. Time-of-Use (TOU) rates.

Starting around the middle of 2024, the Shetlands—and also part of mainland Scotland—will be powered by the 443-megawatt Viking wind farm , consisting of 103 wind turbines on the main island of Shetland. This newer HVDC technology is opening up new opportunities. An inverter there can feed into the mainland AC grid.
