Mercedes is coming to IAA Mobility with five new EVs: the Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS , the new EQB , the new EQE , the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ , and the Concept EQG. Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS. The battery housing is part of the vehicle structure and thus an integral part of the crash concept.

Audi’s e-tron quattro battery-electric SUV concept, which made its formal debut at IAA in Frankfurt ( earlier post ), is a strong indicator of Audi’s series-production electric SUV due in 2018—especially in terms of the powertrain. Audi presented the A8 parallel hybrid as a technology concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Interposed between the electric motor and the wheelset of the eight-speed tiptronic, which is controlled entirely by electronics, is an additional cut-out clutch. In conjunction with the electric unit, this functions as a torque converter.

This is the opposite of the approach taken by Toyota with its Mirai fuel cell vehicle ( earlier post ) and Honda with its new FCV Concept ( earlier post ). Fuel cell technology is running in comepetition with long-range battery electric vehicles. Conceived as an e-quattro, its two electric motors drive all four wheels.
