Ballard Power Systems and First Mode announced a purchase order for Ballard to supply First Mode with 30 hydrogen fuel cell modules—totaling 3 megawatts—to power several hybrid hydrogen and battery ultra-class mining haul trucks. These trucks are estimated to save 2,600 tons of diesel fuel each year.

Anglo American plc unveiled a prototype of the world’s largest hydrogen-powered mine haul truck designed to operate in everyday mining conditions at its Mogalakwena PGMs (platinum group metals) mine in South Africa. Starfire Energy, a Colorado-based developer of modular chemical plants for the carbon-free production of ammonia and hydrogen, has closed a major funding round. Proceeds will be used to advance the development of commercial-scale applications to decarbonize ammonia production and unlock its potential as a zero-carbon energy carrier.

Airbus and South Africa’s National Aerospace Centre will jointly fund research by Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) into the application of fuel cells on airliners. Replacing the fossil-fuel powered APUs with hydrogen fuel cells would help achieve the goals of emission-free and low-noise aircraft operation.
