Oil demand grew by less than 1%—the slowest rate amongst fossil fuels—while gas grew by 2.2%, and coal was the only fossil fuel with above average annual consumption growth at 5.4% Fossil fuels still dominated energy consumption with 87% market share, while renewables rose fastest but are still only 2% of the global total.

Some of the findings of the report include: Global consumption of coal (responsible for about 40% total CO 2 emissions) grew in 2011 by 5%, whereas global consumption of natural gas and oil products increased by only 2% and 1%, respectively. Coal consumption in China increased by 9.7% tonnes, while they decreased in the EU27 from 9.2

Bartis and RAND colleague Lawrence van Bibbe were the authors of a 2011 RAND report concluding that if the US military increased its use of alternative jet and naval fuels that can be produced from coal or various renewable resources, including seed oils, waste oils and algae, there would be no direct benefit to the nation’s armed forces.
