The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the MCV, which the BMW Group will be launching under a new sub-brand in 2013. Unlike the MINI E, the BMW ActiveE features a distinctive “intermediate position” of the accelerator pedal, allowing the vehicle to “glide”.

MINI E Research Project. Funding provided by the Technology Strategy Board is supporting a 12 month field trial of 40 MINI E models. Converted by Allied Vehicles, a proportion of the vehicles will be equipped to transport wheelchair passengers, thus widening the range of potential users as far as possible.

The BMW Concept ActiveE follows the all-electric MINI E as the second large-scale electric vehicle test program to be conducted in the hands of interested customers. An intelligent battery management system helps achieve this range largely independently of external climatic conditions.

Based on its development work on the MINI E and BMW ActiveE concept projects, BMW concluded that “conversion cars”—i.e., vehicles designed to be powered by combustion engines and subsequently converted to run on electric power—do not represent an optimum long-term solution when it comes to meeting the demands of e-mobility.
