A UPS-led consortium has deployed new smart-grid charging technology in London that overcomes the challenge of simultaneously recharging an entire fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) without the need for the expensive upgrade to the power supply grid. A key part of this initiative is the use of onsite energy storage batteries.

The battery pack takes a long time to fully recharge (usually overnight), and even using an expensive commercial recharger takes considerably longer than refilling a standard gasoline tank. In this regard, PHEVs may be closer than BEVs to overcoming the valley, since the current energy storage capabilities for BEVs are inadequate.
