Eligible diesel vehicles, engines and equipment may include drayage trucks; marine engines; locomotives and non-road engines; and equipment or vehicles used in the handling of cargo at a marine or inland water port. These awards will be in addition to EPA’s annual National Clean Diesel Campaign (NCDC) Funding Assistance Program.

The objective is to demonstrate that hydrogen fuel cell technology is an appropriate way to achieve zero-emission rail traffic on non-electrified lines in the Netherlands where there are currently diesel trains running. The train is quiet and emission-free, emitting only water and steam during operation.

Methanol reforming is a relatively simple process that converts a mix of methanol and water into a hydrogen-rich gas. The simple system design enables a high total system power density although the stack power density is lower than generic stack designs. In a generic system that would mean using primary fuel, leading to lower efficiency.
