Following the launch of BYD’s first pickup, the Shark PHEV, Toyota is testing an all-electric Hilux BEV model. Toyota is preparing to produce its first electric pickup in Thailand by the end of next year. BYD, Chinese automakers are taking over Meanwhile, Chinese rival BYD launched its first pickup this week.

BYD launched a price war on ICE vehicles last month with the new Qin Plus EV and PHEV models. The DM-i (PHEV) version is even cheaper, starting at around $11,000 (79,800 yuan). It includes up to 74 mi (120 km) NEDC all-electric range. kWh battery packs for up to 261 mi (420 km) or 316 mi (510 km) CLTC range, respectively.

Its DMO super hybrid off-road platform, used for the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5, is designed for off-road PHEVs. BYD’s DM tech offers up to 245 hp (180 kW) max power and up to 745 miles (1,200 km) CTLC combined range. The fact that BYD released the new name in English (in addition to its Chinese social media) is telling.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.
