Kia just revealed the 2024 EV9 electric SUV in production-ready form, but the automaker on Monday revealed a smaller electric SUV concept. Called the EV5, the concept previews a "production model destined initially for Chinese market later this year," according to Kia.

Kia has staged the surprise reveal of a medium-sized electric SUV dubbed the Concept EV5. Rolled out at the brand’s Chinese EV Day, it comes just days after the production version of the large Kia EV9 SUV was revealed. The exterior of the EV5 features a new version of Kia’s Digital Tiger Face and Star Map lighting.

The project is receiving Chinese support and the first model to be announced is the Moskvitch 3, which appears to be a close relation of the JAC S4. The Moskvitch 3, which is a small SUV about the size of a Kia Seltos, is planned as both an EV (dubbed 3e) and ICE model. It is being built in a former Renault plant in Moscow.

The secret is that Polestar is an electric performance brand from Volvo and its Chinese owner, Geely Holding. I used my solar-panel-powered Level 2 (240V) home charger, but if you’re on the road and want to top off quickly, DC fast charging at 150 kilowatts takes about 40 minutes to get you to 80 percent. Still a bit of a mystery.

BYD – Chinese car maker (the name means Build Your Dreams) has huge plans for Australia, including a range of SUVs and a sports sedan. It’ll be on sale in 2025, possibly as the A9 e-Tron.
